Jordan Spieth produced a stunning finish to secure Open Championship glory at Royal Birkdale on Sunday.

The American went into the final day holding a three-shot advantage over compatriot Matt Kucher, but he endured a torrid start to his round, bogeying three of his opening four holes.

A birdie at the fifth helped steady the ship for the world number three, but he then dropped another shot at the ninth.

The 23-year-old then got into all kinds of trouble on the par four 13th, as he was forced to take a drop, but he somehow managed to get away with a bogey, although he did temporarily surrender the overall lead to Kucher.

Spieth, who suffered a dramatic collapse when leading at the 2016 Masters, could easily have capitulated over his final five holes, but he showed superb mental strength as he rattled off three birdies and an eagle at the 15th to finish on 12-under-par for the tournament, three shots clear of Kucher.

The Texan has now won three major titles and is three-quarters of the way to a career Grand Slam, with the PGA Championship now the only major missing from his list of accolades.

The former world number one described his latest victory as ‘a dream come true’, while he was also quick to thank everyone involved in the tournament.

"Thank you so much for coming out. As players we couldn't appreciate it more," Spieth said.

"This is absolutely a dream come true."

China's Li Haotong shot the round of the day as he produced an unblemished score of 63 to finish in outright third on six-under, while Rory McIlroy and Rafael Cabrera-Bello finished a shot further back.
