Toro Rosso have announced Pierre Gasly will replace Daniil Kvyat for an unspecified period as they plan for Carlos Sainz's exit.

Sainz has agreed to join Renault on loan for the 2018 season as part of the deal that saw Toro Rosso take on Honda as engine suppliers, replacing the Renault power unit they have used this year.

Gasly has now been handed an opportunity, with him expected to take Sainz's seat at Toro Rosso next season.

It has been suggested the 21-year-old will compete in Malaysia and Japan before Kvyat returns for the USA GP, although the team have not revealed how long Gasly's stint will last.

Kvyat, who was promoted to sister team Red Bull for the 2015 season before being dropped in favour of Max Vertsappen after four races in 2016, has been reassured that he is still in Red Bull's plans.
