Nutella is one of the favorite products of gourmands. We make sandwiches for breakfast, we relish on pancakes candlemas (and not only) and some even attack the pot with a teaspoon!

Nutella and the French: a story of greed

It was the Italian company Ferrero that created the famous spread in Piedmont , Italy. Originally, the recipe is linked to disastrous economic circumstances after the Second World War. Faced with the scarcity of foodstuffs, Pietro Ferrero imagines a pastry filled with chocolate to give strength to children. To make the sweetness more energetic, the Italian decides to replace some of the cocoa beans with nuts, very abundant in the region of Piedmont ... The most famous spread is born! Originally from Italy, Ferrero arrived in France in 1959 and launched Mon Chéri in 1960. Since 1961, Nutella is no longer made in Italy. Since 2011, it is the French site of Villers-Ecalles which is the biggest world producer of Nutella!
The Nutella knows a real success story. Arrived in the United States in 1983, he suffers from competition with peanut butter. Since 2007, the Nutella has even its international day , celebrated on February 5th of each year .

Nutella and the others ...

Like any success, Nutella faces many detractors. His main fault? Palm oil too often produced to the detriment of the environment . The one found in Nutella comes from Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Brazil and is labeled RSPO CG, a label that distinguishes sustainable palm oil. Side composition, we also find sugar, cocoa and hazelnuts, which represent 13% of the product. In fact, the two main ingredients are sugar and palm oil, which alone account for 72% of the product. Not terribly nutritional, but ...

Good news for detractors of Nutella: even if the brand occupies 83% of the spreads market, there are lots of other spreads and you can even make choco-hazelnut spreads yourself.
