International Women's Day is celebrated every 8 March by women's groups from around the world . Backed by the UN , International Women ' s Day originated in European socialist revolutions in the early 20th century.

On March 8, 1921, Lenin decreed International Women's Day in honor of those who first demonstrated in Petrograd on March 8, 1917, at the outbreak of the Russian Revolution .
