THE KELLY BAG OF HERMÈS: THE MYTHIC GRACE

Originally, the first Hermes Kelly bag was used to carry the saddle and the boots of the riders , its size was thus much more important. In 1923, it was first named Torpedo and took a trapezoidal shape to be easily slid into a car door. It was not until 1930 that the Hermès brand decided to create a smaller version of the bag, for a more feminine audience.

Five years later, it is revisited: its cut becomes more elegant, the leather is rigid and the clasp is equipped with a padlock. It allows to carry all the objects that a woman needs to keep with her. But it was not until 1954 that Grace Kelly discovered the Hermes bag: during the filming of La Main au Collet, Alfred Hitchcock asked her costume designer to choose the props for the film in a Hermès boutique. Grace Kelly immediately falls in love with the brand.

A few years later, the actress who became princess gets off her plane and uses the Hermes bag to hide her rounded belly, in order to formalize her pregnancy later. This graceful and touching image of the princess makes her famous to all women, who immediately want to have the same. It is then that it is renamed "the Kelly bag". The legend is born.
