What the new decree says

Since 1 January 2014, the identity card is no longer valid for 10 years, but 15 years . The consequence: cards issued between 2 January 2004 and 31 December 2013 are automatically extended by 5 years. No need to go to the town hall, change is automatic . A less administrative approach that saves us time.
Attention, all identity cards expired before 1 January 2014 will not benefit from the application of this decree and this 5-year extension.
Moreover, this simplification does not apply to minors , the date of validity of their identity papers remains 10 years.

Can I travel with an expired identity card?

Yes. Major or minor, traveling in France with an expired-extended identity card is possible.
And since January 1, 2014, adults can travel and cross borders with an expired-extended identity card in the European Union and in the Schengen area.
What about countries outside the EU? In the summer of 2014 only 8 countries formally accept the five-year extended identity card: Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Monaco, Montenegro, Slovenia, Switzerland and Tunisia. The other countries have not taken official positions.
On the other hand, in Morocco only tourists who have chosen an organized tour (for example in a holiday club) can enter the territory with an expired identity card. If they travel solo or in family, this flexibility of customs does not apply.
And for the other countries of the world , it will be absolutely necessary to present a valid passport, otherwise you run the risk of being stuck at the airport!

Redoing your identity card in express, is it possible?

Unfortunately no. Whether it is a simple renewal, a loss or a theft, it takes a period of 4 weeks to receive his new ID.
On the other hand, the passport can be issued expressly (2 days at the earliest and 10 days at the latest). The only catch: unlike the identity card, the passport is paying. Find all the information on our special passport file.
