Shrewsbury defender Joe Riley has returned to training ahead of schedule after suffering ankle ligament damage in the final game of last season.

Full-back Riley was hurt in a challenge by Chris Maguire during his side's 2-0 defeat at Oxford and has spent almost four months on the sidelines.

However, he was able to join the rest of the squad late last week and is now targeting a return to action.

Riley told ShrewsWeb: "I've had injuries in the past, but there's nothing you can do with tackles like that.

"I think it was a genuine tackle. Chris Maguire texted me after the game and wished me all the best with my recovery, so that was nice of him.

"The positive thing is I haven't really missed much football, so timing-wise, it couldn't have been much better."
